Say right away, very little is known about Indian motorcycles in the world. And Russia is no exception. Well, at least that was until 2005, when the now-iconic Roger Donaldson movie “The Fastest Indian” starring Anthony Hopkins starred (he played the famous New Zealand motorcycle racer Bert Monroe). True, it tells about a motorcycle in 1920, which after 45 years of tuning finally managed to overcome the 200-mile bar of speed (320 km / h). Therefore, the question of whether the brand is alive right now remained unanswered. By the way, some believe that Indian is an Indian brand, and you won’t refuse logic in them …
Through thorns to glory
Calm down right away, Indian is alive. Moreover, since 2011, it belongs to the no less famous American company Polaris Industries, which poured new blood into the once famous brand. But Indian is perhaps the oldest motorcycle brand in the world. Back in 1901, the Massachusetts company Hendee Manufacturing Company (founded in the 19th century by the bicycle racer George Handy) created its first motorcycle, giving it a name in honor of the natives of America, conquered and plundered by Europeans. However, the bicycles that the company produced since 1897 were also called. Only in 1928, the manufacturer changed its name, guessing to include in it the name of the motorcycle brand that had already become popular by then. The company became known as the Indian Motocycle Manufacturing Company.
Since 1904, she began to paint her motorcycles in red, which later became the trademark of the brand. Soon, the company took a leading position in the production of motorcycles, not only in the United States, but throughout the world. This continued until the end of the 20s, when America was covered by the Great Depression. Since then, the production of motorcycles under the brand name Indian several times stopped and resumed again, and the rights to them passed from hand to hand. In 2013, the current owner launched into production three new models at once (the Chief family, not very different, however, differing from each other). Since then, one can say that the production of motorcycles of the legendary brand has again been in good hands.
On top of the gamut
In a two-wheeled mill, as in the world of cars, each brand has its own rank and file and its generals. However, in my opinion, it is impossible to rank Scout, which opens the modern Indian gamut, as the first one. He is at least a captain or even a major. And in this case, our today’s hero Roadmaster is Colonel General. Or even a marshal. And in size, and weight, and equipment, and external decoration, he does not pull for less! And it’s better not to recall the price at all: finding a motorcycle for 3 million rubles is very difficult. So it’s not even Maybach, a Rolls Royce in the motorcycle world. It’s not like you sit on such a bike, you even look in awe.
I admit, so far I have been negative towards American motorcycles. Well, I didn’t like these huge and heavy two-wheeled dreadnoughts! Although the fact that they look beautiful, admitted. Polarisov’s designers are alright with the aesthetics: you can look at any Indian indefinitely, and even at Roadmaster. However, why does a real peasant need these platonic relationships, accompanied by protracted “peers”? We prefer closer communication – it’s time to drive!
The first thing I appreciated when riding a Roadmaster was that, despite its vastness, it’s convenient for a person of almost any height and build to sit on it. And hereafter … I could not understand American motorcycles before, including because of the completely absurd, in my opinion, chopper landing: this is when all your limbs are in front, and the “fifth point” is behind. That was the way to sit on the Roadmaster. However, he reached the steering wheel and foot levers without any problems. Well, it seems to be not so uncomfortable …
The search for the ignition switch did not lead to anything. The larvae of the castle are neither on the gas tank, nor on the left under it (as the Americans often do). But the look came across a keyless start button very familiar to cars. How – and here ?! It turned out that way, the key from the pocket can not be reached. But I still put it in one of the many glove compartments – so that my colleagues could ride without me. By the way, travel bags, which together with glove compartments give an impressive 143 liters, comparable to the trunk of a car, have, of course, traditional locks. But for use, inserting a key into them is not necessary at all: just press the button on the key fob – this is another similarity with the machine.
Usually the workplace of a motorcycle driver is adjusted only by adjusting the mirrors. Here, in addition to them, you can also change the position of the windshield. And the electric drive does it. True, engineering thought has not yet reached the electrically adjustable mirrors, but it has reached the heating of the seats and steering knobs, moreover, the heating of the driver and passenger seats is regulated separately.
